“I need a few more weeks to prepare for the wedding.”

Richard dropped his knife and fork on his plate so fast that it startled me more than Finn’s sudden, loud declaration. And then the old man shot me a look. Me . What the fuck did I do?

You fucked his son, Aiden. That’s what you did.

Yes, but he didn’t know that. Did he?

Oh, fuck. He was still glaring at me like this was all my fault. Hell, I didn’t even know what was going through Finn’s mind at the moment, why he said that or decided to postpone his wedding.

I’d run from that house after we spent the night together.

I had been feeling insanely vulnerable the morning after. Made sense. What man wouldn’t have felt vulnerable in that kind of situation? I was in love with a guy who was going to be married to someone else within a few weeks. I’d been so scared that Finn was going to wake up feeling disgusted with himself and me. In fact, I had been pretty sure of that. I’d also been pretty sure that our friendship was effectively ruined. A numbness had taken over my senses, so the pain had become non-existent. I’d been grateful for that. Finn’s loss would devastate me in ways which I did not even want to consider. But I would have lost him anyway even if I hadn’t pulled off that whole seduction thing.

It was over. Him and I were over. But I did feel this strange satisfaction deep down that I had managed to make him want me to such an extent. If only for a night.

After heading out of his room back at the beach house that morning, I’d worked out a little before cleaning up the mess left by the previous night’s partying. The longer I had waited for Finn to wake up, the more stressed I’d become. And after twenty minutes of silently panicking, I realized that I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t face him. I couldn’t bear to see the regret and disgust in his eyes.

And so I had just left.

Yup. I had taken the coward’s way out. Avoid and desert. That was my go-to when I couldn’t handle a situation, and that was what I had chosen to do then, praying that Finn would come to terms with it, make his peace and shit, and then, he would go off and get married as planned. I wasn’t needed. I was never needed.

He’d followed me back to the city two days ago. We hadn’t spoken since that night. But my family had been invited for dinner this evening at his place, and I’d been too curious, too desperate to see him, to refuse the invitation.

“Your mother and I are taking care of all the arrangements, Finnigan,” Richard said briskly. “There is nothing for you to prepare for.”

“I need more time, Dad,” Finn said firmly.

“That isn’t an option, I’m afraid. The wedding will take place as decided on the date that has been agreed upon by both our families.
